Masterclass for Media Ethnography: Camera Ethnography – Filming as an epistemic practice

Workshops and master classes on camera ethnography are opportunities for collaborative research. They are most fruitful when participants bring their own material and experiences, and the more diverse their respective fields of research the better. Such events offer ideal conditions for exploration, following Wittgenstein, of how practices are, or could be, situated – here and now and there and then. In a master class in 2020, for example, one small groups’ arrangement of film scenes on the topic of “driving/drifting” (in German “treiben”) shed light on different facets of “treiben” situated variously in unmechanized agriculture, in an urban environment, and in a primary school classroom.
